CLOS PEGASE CABERNET ‘04

Lot Description:
Northeast of Calistoga, in the shadow of Mt. St. Helena, the 35-acre Palisades Vineyard is our most prized vineyard. The alluvial stone and gravel create a ‘horizontal hillside’ meaning that the soils are very poor and infertile giving rise to paltry yields of small, densely-concentrated Cabernet berries which produce wines of striking intensity. The wines from Palisades are richly aromatic and expressive, wedded to dense tannins and a full, unctuous palate.

Cabernet Sauvignon

Pina Howell Mountain Cabernet 2000

This is a big, luscious, meaty juicy cabernet that demonstrates another fabulous year on Howell Mountain. The Vineyard matures much later than the rest of Napa Valley, achieving a different texture to the maturity---very balanced with a big and elegant mouth feel. This wine absolutely smells of Cabernet, a very particular combination of chocolate, berries, tea and Howell Mountain spice in the nose. The wine has a long, elegant finish now with beautiful round nuances in the mid-palate.  As the wine matures, that long finish will develop and even lengthen. The wine has at least a decade to reach itÂ’s peak; it would suit flavorful dishes which can play off its elegance and vigor.

MANSFIELD Napa Valley Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon 2004

Cedar, pipe tobacco and exotic spices provide a luscious backdrop to an intense and graceful palate. Ripe dark berries fill the mouth with an explosive and juicy mid-palate. The finish lasts well after the last sip is enjoyed.

Consisting of two pinot noirs, this new producer is created in partnership by three men of diverse backgrounds and is producing ultra-premium pinot noir wines from three different clones and three different rootstocks. The grapes are harvested by hand and exclusively at night while the juice chemistry is more stable. The wineryÂ’s name reflects this practice and translates to "Carneros of the Night". Carneros della Notte is also the first producer to use a glow-in-the-dark wine label to further articulate the wineryÂ’s unique approach to pinot noir production. Their Carneros Pinot 2004 was voted #1 by women at the 2006 Pinot Shoot out and rated 92pts by the pinot report. The DIII Pinot Noir is a massive pinot that is meant to age and is in a laser etched bottle. DIII stands for David Harmon III who owns the vineyard that these grapes come from.

MIDSUMMER CELLARS Canon Creek Vineyard Napa Valley Cabernet 2004

This vintage exhibits heady, varietal aromas punctuated by cherry, blackberry, with hints of vanilla, licorice. On the palate, these varietal aromas are complemented by generous and yet dense fruit; soft, enrobing and rounded tannins; and followed by a long, lingering, bright finish.   New, sweet oak imparts extra richness.  Should improve for the next six years or so.

ATHAIR RUSSIAN RIVER PINOT NOIR 2005

Athair is a collaboration of two winemakers Tom Keith and Jim McMahon. In keeping with Irish heritage and strong family traditions, they chose the name ATHAIR, which is the Gaelic word for "father." Jim chose this name as a tribute to the fathers who have played such a profound and wonderful role in his life. Athair honors his late father, Jim McMahon, Sr., his stepfather, Pete Baylacq, who has been a tremendous help and guiding force, and his father-in-law, friend and wine-making partner, Tom Keith.

The wine is primarily grapes from the Calegari vineyard on the Eastside road of Russian River Valley and the Cleary Ranch in Freestone. Aromas of cherry, rhubarb, toast and cola keep your nose in the glass and flavors of cranberry, Bing cherry and vanilla keep you coming back for more. Harmonious and complete, this is the stuff Russian River dreams are made of...

ATHAIR Russian River Chardonnay 2006

Our first offering of a Chardonnay is made from Sonoma County grapes, located in the western part of the Russian River Valley. The fruit came from the famous Bacigalupi Vineyard, with the harvest taking place in early September, at full maturity, to bring out the ripe flavors of Bartlett Pear and Honeydew Melon.

This would be a perfect pairing with Halibut or Petrale Sole, topped with a mango chutney, or just served chilled on a hot summer's eve. Enjoy!

William Cole winery is a prime Napa property originally built in 1876 as the J.C. Weinberger Winery. It is the oldest standing stone winery in the Napa Valley. After Prohibition the top two stories of this ghost winery were converted into a residence, and in 2002 the cellar of the historic stone winery began its winemaking renaissance as William Cole Vineyards. Owner/3rd generation Napa winemaker Bill Ballentine only makes one wine - a 300 case production Napa Cabernet Sauvignon. Bill is a classic one man operation - he tends the vineyards, drops fruit, decides when to harvest, and makes the wine in its entirety. Bill knows a thing or two about Cabernet - he was St. Clement's winemaker in their "heyday" - blending their now legendary 1997 Cabernet Sauvignon (Wine Spectator Top 100) At the aforementioned Auction Napa Valley, William Cole's barrel received the 8th highest bid out of 107 wines. Not too shabby for a first time participant. One whiff will take you to Cabernet Heaven: Black Cherry, tobacco, red cherry, black strap molasses, charcoal, freshly tilled loamy earth, vanillin oak, roses, and to top it all off, just a hint of tar...and that's just what it smells like. On the palate, it is super smooth; big and bold yet balanced with everything integrated into a plush package of powerful Cabernet goodness. Red cherry, mocha, cocoa powder, exotic spices, black currant and blackberry make up the intense core. Hints of tar, earth, smoke, tobacco follow and lead into the third act of Bing cherry and kid leather; with soft but age worthy tannins and and a long, long finish. This wine is as elegant as it is powerful; drink one now and be amazed, then put some down to enjoy over the next decade or so."
